The Top 5 Natural Homemade Remedies For Ringing In The Ears

The most commonly asked question I get working as a healthcare professional is about natural cures for ringing in the ears. It seems that people want to try the homemade remedy because it tends to be…

  • Safer
  • Easier
  • Cheaper

But do home remedies for ear ringing really work? Can they help alleviate symptoms? I’ve compiled some potential natural treatment options for ringing in the ears. Let’s examine them more closely.

Here are my top 5 natural cures based on research, reviews, and experience.

#5. Ginger Root

Ginger root can be purchased at your local grocery store. The best method to consume it, in my opinion, is to make a drink. Otherwise, the taste is very strong and it can be difficult to figure out to which foods you could add the ginger.

Method: Heat up water in a small pan and add about 1 tablespoon of shredded ginger root, 1 cinnamon stick, and 2 tablespoons of honey.  Start small with the quantity of ginger root until you figure out how much you can put in and still enjoy the taste.  After the mixture starts to boil, take it off the heat, and strain to remove the solids. Add more honey if desired and enjoy. Alternatively, you can buy ginger extract in pill form at a vitamin store and take it as a natural supplement.

Why would it work? Ginger is known to reduce inflammation and improve blood circulation. Ginger also contains antioxidants which help fight off various diseases and the common cold. Reviews from tinnitus sufferers is split on whether this works. Some people claim it does reduce the symptoms or help calm their nerves when dealing with the anxiety and stress related to ear ringing.

Due to the following reasons, I recommend giving ginger a try to help reduce ringing in the ears:

  • It is safe, natural, and consumed by people regularly so it would not harm you in any way
  • It can improve overall health if it is known to help fight off diseases and improve blood flow
  • It has worked for some patients in reducing symptoms so it may work for you
  • You can find it at any grocery store

#4. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has recently been a very hot product when it comes to improving skin, hair, and overall health. There has also been talk that coconut oil has antibacterial and soothing properties. With all these benefits of coconut oil, how does it fare when it comes to treating ringing ear symptoms?

Method: First and foremost, make sure you buy organic and 100% extra virgin coconut oil. Try applying it by swabbing a pea sized amount on a cotton swab or cotton ball and gently swishing on the outside of the ear. Another method is by putting a dime sized amount in the microwave for 10 seconds until melted. Be careful so that it is not too hot! Then use a dropper to place 1-2 drops in each ear.

Why would it work? Introducing coconut oil into your life will typically increase general health because it can smooth your skin, improve hair texture, and if eaten, will provide a source of healthy fats into your diet. Does it help treat ringing in the ears specifically? Evidence does not show that it directly cures ringing in the ears but can help with related factors such as blood circulation and a healthy diet.

As with all homemade remedies though, why not try it? Coconut oil is readily available in all supermarkets and will only increase your overall health without providing negative side effects.

#3. Epsom Salt

Epsom salt can be purchased at your local pharmacy. It is a mineral compound of magnesium and sulfate. The health benefits can include improving aches/pains, relaxation, healing cuts/lacerations, treating infections or colds, removing a variety of toxins from the body, and improving blood circulation.

Method: Fill your bath tub with warm water and add 2 cups of epsom salt into the tub. Then, soak your whole body for 15-30 minutes. Try to also spend 5 minutes soaking your head and ears (without getting the salt water into your eyes).

Another effective method is to measure 2 tablespoons of coconut or olive oil and add 1 tablespoon epsom salt. Mix together and then apply to the outside of the ear. Keep this mixture on your ears for about 15 minutes then remove by washing away with warm water.

Why would it work? Research studies have shown that epsom salts provide healing and soothing benefits to the human body. There have not been studies proving that epsom salt can specifically cure ringing ears. However, people with ringing in the ears have found epsom salts to be an effective treatment method. Moreover, there are no side effects, doctors, or expensive fees to try it. I would try it for two weeks and then evaluate my symptoms again after that.

#2. Onion & Garlic

Both of these food pantry staples are known to improve the immune system, reduce inflammation, and improve blood circulation. They are cheap and readily available.

Method: It seems that a popular method of use for onion and garlic as a natural remedy for ringing in the ears is to create a juice and then place drops in the ear. I would not recommend this method as it may irritate the ear canal and cause adverse reactions in some people.

I do recommend creating an onion/garlic satchel. Chop up 1/4 of a small white onion or use a food processor. Add 1-2 pressed garlic cloves. Also, add 1 tablespoon coconut or olive oil and mix together. Once a paste is created, lay out square of gauze or you could also use a tea bag (make a small slit and remove the contents). Place 1 teaspoon of the mixture and seal using tape, glue, or by just twisting the edge. Place this small satchel on the outside of your ear canal for about 20 minutes.

Of course, eating more onion and garlic by cooking with it is also a beneficial way to treat ringing in the ears naturally. Add sautéed onion and/or garlic into your meat dishes or for a boost of flavor in salads.

Why would it work? Onion and garlic have health benefits that may be related to the causes and/or instigators of ringing in the ears. By improving your body’s ability to fight off infection and improving blood circulation in the body, onion and garlic may be an effective way to improve your symptoms. If all else fails, you will be safely and naturally boosting your overall health by consuming these super foods.

#1. Apple Cidar Vinegar

Whenever natural and homemade remedies are even mentioned, it seems that apple cider vinegar is always at the top of the list. Apple cider vinegar (or ACV) is frequently used to treat infections, colds, skin conditions, nail problems, and even hormonal imbalances in the body. You can buy a huge jug for under $5.00 at most grocery stores.

Method: Ingesting ACV orally is the easiest way to introduce it into your body. Warm up a mug of hot water, add 2 tablespoons ACV, and 2 tablespoons of honey or your favorite sweetener. Drink 1-2 mugs of this tasty and tangy beverage daily. You could also add 2 tablespoons of ACV into your daily smoothie blended with yogurt and your favorite frozen fruit. Make a salad dressing by combining olive oil, ACV, and honey and add it into your favorite lunch salad. The ways to add this tangy liquid to your diet are pretty limitless.

Why would it work? ACV is known to have anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties. It neutralizes pH and hormones in the body. Even better, it is safe, natural, and cost effective. You can ingest it in many different ways so it is an easy way to add some healthy benefits to your diet. There is a multitude of research and reviews from people suffering with ringing ears claiming this works to relieve or soothe their symptoms. I would give it a try as it the methodology is simple and there are virtually no potential side effects.

Have you or anyone you know tried these remedies? If so, please comment and share what has worked and what has not worked. If natural methods have not worked for you, here are some medicines that may be effective for curing ringing in the ears.
